World Literature

“Books are the carriers of civilization.”

-Thoreau

This class is designed primarily for high school students, due to the level and content of the reading selections.

Each monthly class will include instruction in the literature of a particular continent, student presentations, and review/discussion of homework. Every student will have a month to complete a set of assignments, which include study of a literary topic, biographical questions about one author, assigned readings by that author which are set in the continent of the month, study questions on that reading, preparation of a summary presentation, and a personal response essay.

Each packet has a different author to study and then be presented to the other students in class. The students are expected to complete their reading, research, and presentation before the monthly due date. Students will view and comment on each other’s presentations and together we will build an overall picture of historic and modern literature around the world.

A list of the authors & works available for study each month may be viewed under Class Materials.

This class will be conducted via Google Classroom from August to May. Semester options are available; inquire for more information.

2024-5 classes begin August 26.

Note: Students will need to access (either purchase or borrow from library) 8 primary source books [when freely available on the internet, this will be noted].  Students and parents will confer and choose one author/book from each month on a provided chart (book choice is first come, first serve).
