Survey of Christianity (semester)
This course explores the variety of Christian theologies, groups, and practices
This survey-and-response class is designed primarily for 8th-12th grade students. (parents are also welcome to join in).
This class is designed to teach about the history, structure, and beliefs of groups within Christianity, and to help students learn how to examine and formulate a personal response to those groups.
Each month, students will choose a take-home packet with assigned research, readings, and questions regarding a specific group that self-identifies as Christian. The course materials and instructor will not tell the students how they should respond, but will instead require the student to first acquire basic knowledge of the group’s history and teachings, and then examine those teachings. Next, the student will discuss the religion with a parent or other adult family member and then with a spiritual mentor (such as a pastor, youth leader, Sunday school teacher, etc). The student will then develop a personal response in essay form and will prepare a short video summary to present in class. Students must be prepared to courteously comment on other students’ and the teacher’s videos in the class stream, and will answer questions from other students and/or the teacher.
This semester class will be conducted via Google Classroom from February to May. Summer options are available; inquire for more information.
2025 class begins February 3.
*NOTE: This is a semester-length course
