Philosophy
Philosophy is the foundation of all study and the basis of clear reasoning
This class is designed primarily for high school junior- or senior-level students (11th/12th grade). Younger students may be allowed with permission of instructor.
Each monthly class will include instruction in a category of philosophy, instruction in logic and argumentation, and discussion of homework. Each student will take a packet of work to complete during the month before the next class. The packets will have exercises in logic and argumentation, research questions about a particular philosopher within a current category of philosophy, assigned readings by the chosen philosopher, preparation of a short video summary presentation, and a personal response essay.
The goal of the class is to strengthen critical thinking, logic skills, courteous discussion, and familiarity with prominent ideas of philosophy from ancient to modern times. Students must be prepared to courteously participate in discussions with other students on the class website.
Students will need to access primary source materials, most of which will be available to read on the internet for free. Some more recent works may need to be borrowed from a library or purchased.
This class will be conducted via Google Classroom from August to May. Semester options are available; inquire for more information.
2024-5 classes begin August 26.
