Month 5 - Thermodynamics

Consumables

  • Baby powder or matches

  • Balloons, 3

  • Candle

  • Cardboard box (shoe box or tissue box works well)

  • Duct tape

  • Empty clear plastic soda bottles (2, with the labels removed)

  • Empty soda can

  • Felt in different colors (black, white, and green are a good mix)

  • Plastic wrap

  • Sheet of paper

  • Tape

Food items

  • Hard-boiled egg

  • Ice

  • Popcorn, unpopped

  • Snow (or ice shavings)

  • Water

Other

  • Baking pan

  • Glass jar/bottle with a mouth of a smaller diameter than the egg (but not too small!). Glass milk jugs work well.

  • Hair dryer

  • Hot plate or stove

  • Large mug or a small pot

  • Lighter

  • Metal can or pot, large

  • Microwave or popcorn popper

  • Ping pong ball

  • Scissors

  • Spoon

  • Sunshine

  • Thermometer that can read temperatures down to 35° or 40° Fahrenheit

  • Thumbtack or nail

  • Washer, metal with opening smaller than the soda bottle openings

  • Water bottle, clear plastic

 

Note:  Most supplies can be shared if you have more than one student working as lab partners for the experiments.
