American Literature
“You answered the questions I had, explained the assignments clearly, and was an overall amazing teacher!”
—A.P. , American Literature student
This class is designed primarily for high school students. Younger students may be allowed with permission of instructor.
Each monthly class will include study of the literature of a particular time period in American history, student presentations, and review/discussion of homework. Every student will choose a packet of work to complete during the month before the next class, with biographical questions to research about one author of the time period, assigned readings of a work or works by that author, preparation of a short video summary presentation, and a personal response essay.
Each packet has a different author to study and then be presented to the other students in class. The students will be expected to complete their reading and research, then to prepare a short video presentation of the resulting information. Students will comment on each other’s videos and together we will build an overall picture of literature during the time period under study.
A list of the authors & works available for study each month may be viewed under Class Materials.
This class will be conducted via Google Classroom from August to May. Semester options are available; inquire for more information.
2024-5 classes begin August 26.
Note #1: This class coordinates with US History, but each is also a stand-alone course.
Note #2: Students will need to access (either purchase or borrow from a library) 8 primary source books [when freely available on the internet, this will be noted]. Students and parents will confer and choose books a month at a time from the provided list (book choice is first come, first serve).
